Alumni Spotlight: Ed Blakely

In Memoriam, SBVC Class of '58
Edward James Blakely, a proud San Bernardino Valley College alumnus, was born on April 21, 1938, in San Bernardino, California, to a modest African and Native American family. His life and legacy reflect the complexities of a racially and socially divided post-World War II America, as well as the enduring power of education, perseverance, and public service.
Ed carried his family's aspirations far beyond San Bernardino, ultimately serving in roles that took him to the White House and to leadership positions in cities and nations around the globe. He became a world- renowned urban planner, professor, and public intellectual whose work reshaped how communities think about development, equity, and sustainability.
