San Bernardino Valley College softball delivered an exciting finish Monday, Feb. 9, defeating Rio Hondo College 8–7 in a dramatic walk-off victory.

Despite recording just three hits in the game, the Wolverines found ways to create scoring opportunities. SBVC showed tremendous discipline at the plate, drawing 10 walks and capitalizing on four Rio Hondo errors to keep innings alive and apply pressure throughout the game.

With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh inning, Julissa Alford was hit by a pitch to start the rally and quickly advanced into scoring position. Moments later, Kristina Sandoval drove a deep ball to left field, allowing Alford to score the winning run and seal the victory. Sandoval had a standout performance, collecting two of the team’s three hits, driving in four runs, and pitching six strong innings before Kaydance Hjelm closed the game with a scoreless seventh.

Season Outlook

This win reflects the identity of the 2025–26 Wolverines: resilient, patient, and opportunistic. Rather than relying solely on power hitting, SBVC has shown it can manufacture runs through discipline at the plate, aggressive base running, and steady pitching.

As the season continues, the Wolverines’ ability to stay composed in close games and capitalize on opportunities positions them well for continued growth and success.
