Savanah Howze

For Savanah Howze, a first-generation college student from Colton, San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) became the launchpad for a future in chemical engineering. Inspired by a high school chemistry teacher and mentored at SBVC by Dr. Sheri Lillard, Savanah discovered her love for physical chemistry and engineering.

Set to graduate with associate degrees in chemistry, math, and physics, she’s headed to Cal Poly Pomona this fall. Along the way, Savanah balanced academics with jobs as a receptionist, tutor, and lab assistant. These experiences built both her technical skills and confidence.

Her standout moment? An internship in materials science that led her to present research at the American Chemical Society conference—thanks to encouragement from mentors like Dr. Dan Mayo and hands-on training from lab techs.

Transitioning from student-athlete life in Maryland to the self-paced college grind at SBVC was tough, but Savanah adapted with the help of supportive peers and faculty. Now, she's proud to be the first in her family to graduate college.

To fellow students, she offers this advice: “Take your time, enjoy the experience, and don’t rush it. Community college is a powerful place to grow.”

Looking ahead, Savanah dreams of earning a Ph.D. in physical chemistry and giving back through mentorship and research. As she prepares to transfer, she shares one final message: “Congratulations! I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this journey with you.”
