LA84 Selects SBVC Athletics as Recipient for $125,000 Grant
San Bernardino Valley College is expanding its impact in the community thanks to a $125,000 grant from the LA84 Foundation. This is SBVC’s first grant from the organization, which is dedicated to transforming lives through youth sports, particularly in underserved communities.
The funding will support a yearlong outreach program led by SBVC’s Athletics Department, engaging local elementary and middle school students in physical activity and movement-based skills. The program will conclude with a track and field event hosted on SBVC’s campus.
“This grant gives us the opportunity to reach children early, helping them build physical fitness, confidence, and a love for movement,” said Mike Layne, Director of the SBVC Foundation. “We’re not just teaching kids to run, jump, and throw. We’re instilling values like teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.”
The need is clear. National studies show that 60 percent of American children are at higher risk of chronic disease due to low cardiorespiratory fitness, and 66 percent of California youth do not meet the CDC’s recommendation of one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity at least five days a week.
Beyond fitness, this effort helps young students form early connections to higher education. “Introducing them to SBVC at a young age can spark interest in academic and athletic programs, while promoting long-term student wellness,” Layne said.
The SBVC Foundation remains committed to supporting students and the broader community. This new partnership with the LA84 Foundation strengthens that mission and helps cultivate the academic and athletic growth of the next generation.
